The Incident
During a routine worksite visit, our team was called to assist an employee experiencing significant pain in her left ring finger. She explained that while climbing into her truck on the job, she grabbed the inside roof for support, feeling an immediate “pop” in her left ring finger. For several weeks afterward, she dealt with persistent pain and irritation, which made it difficult for her to fully flex and extend the finger. The pain was most prominent around the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint.
Onsite Evaluation
We conducted an onsite evaluation to assess the severity of the injury. The employee’s blood pressure was stable at 130/70, and a physical examination of her left hand revealed localized pain and irritation around the PIP joint of her ring finger. Despite the discomfort, her range of motion for flexion and extension was normal, and her sensation remained intact. Based on these findings, we diagnosed her with a tendon strain in the PIP joint of her left ring finger.
Treatment Plan and Outcome
To address her symptoms, we provided an anti-inflammatory cream and instructed her to apply it three times daily. Just days later, she reported significant relief in pain and irritation, allowing her to regain full use of her hand. This simple, non-invasive treatment proved highly effective, allowing her to continue working with minimal disruption.
